White Paper: Cabling as Architecture: The Physical Realization of L12 AI Clusters

Written by Wiwynn | Nov 5, 2026, 1:59:59 AM

Cabling is not the last step of an L12 deployment; it is one of the first architectural decisions. Every physical connection in an AI cluster is derived from the topology, which makes the topology the first bill of materials.

Yet the total is assembled from several separate segments by several separate groups — and very few programs can state how many physical connections a deployment needs before the materials are ordered.
This paper sets out the cabling decisions that have to move upstream at L12 scale, why the physical layer is the seam where deployment schedules are lost, and how the physical definition of connectivity can be derived at design time rather than interpreted in the field. It draws on Wiwynn’s experience leading the first ODM L12 deployment of an NVIDIA GB200 cluster in Asia.
